Stop Checking Those Numbers!

in Blogging Advice

One of the traps that new bloggers can fall into is becoming a slave to their statistics. You launch your blog and tell your mother and best friend about it. Then you submit a post to a carnival and soon you get the first visit from a person whom you don’t know. Not long after you decide to install some tracking software and an RSS feed. And then it starts… the incessant checking of your statistics: visits, visitors, subscribers to your feed.

I have one word of advice. Stop. Stop right now. Check the sites once a day, if you absolutely must. But paying too much attention to the numbers will only frustrate you needlessly, and take your attention away from where it should really be: writing your content.

How often do you check your stats? Hourly? Daily? Weekly? Do you know off the top of your head how many RSS subscribers you have?

haha….oh how this is true! i’m getting better at it now – just check a few times a day – but it’s still pretty addicting and exciting even after a year of blogging ;) I’ve learned to keep doing my thing though no matter what the stats say, so at least that’s good!

Not hourly. Two, maybe three times a day…at each of my four stat counters! LOL Okay, there are a couple that I only check once a day. And, yes, I know off the top of my head how many subscribers I have. ;-)

I definitely get sucked into watching my stats, but I can usually keep it to checking just once a day. It’s pretty exciting to see new readers!

I check ‘em once a week, every Wednesday morning. That way I’m sure to have something exciting!
