One of the things that people do when they start out blogging is to put ads on their site. That’s normal- most of us have heard the stories about people earning thousands of dollars a month through blogging, easy money it seems. What harm could it do to slap a few ads up and earn a few bucks?
Beyond the issue of whether or not the vast majority of bloggers will ever earn enough to cover their hosting fees is the issue of the appropriateness of placing ads on a blog in the first place.
Imagine that you have a blog on frugality and personal finance, like mine. You write lots of posts on keeping control of your money, and over coming the latte factor, and staying on track. Why then, are you running ads that try to incite your readers to buy stuff? Or you have a blog on veganism. You probably wouldn’t show ads for McDonalds.
I imagine that most bloggers try to choose their ads pretty carefully, at least the ones they have control over. So take a look at your blogs and think about how they fit your readership. After all, an ad that targets your readers is more likely to be clicked on than an ad that doesn’t.

This is very helpful! I haven’t started advertising yet simply because I want to do it with integrity. Of course, I still haven’t figured out exactly how to do that but this post helps!
