One of the best ways to get people to link back to you is to link to them first. Think about it- aren’t you ever so slightly thrilled when someone links to you? At the very least, that link makes you sit up and take notice of them. Maybe you don’t link back to them right away, but you might eventually. At any rate, you are now aware that they exist, thanks to their link to you, and before you weren’t.
But how do you find out who’s linking to you in the first place?
It’s easy enough to do in WordPress. There is a box on the blog dashboard called ‘incoming links’. You can edit this to include as many or as few incoming links as you like, plus there’s even a way you can subscribe to the RSS feed, to be notified in your reader of when someone links back to you.
It’s a bit more complicated for Blogger, as you have to download a widget and then add it to your site. But don’t go through all that, there’s an easier way around the problem!
There is a tool called Google Alerts, from Google, which will send you (daily, weekly etc) any mentions of the key words you’ve chosen. For example, my first Google Alert for Pretty Your Blog has as targeted keywords Pretty Your Blog. I then have a second one set up with the blog’s address. Google will pull items from different categories such as news, blogs, videos etc, but I have only chosen the ‘blogs’ option, as that’s where my target audience is. When you find a mention of someone who has linked to you, you can easily hop over and leave a comment on their site.
