Manage Your Blog’s Ads

in Blogging Advice

If you’re like most people, you’re trying to eek out a little bit of extra money through blogging. Don’t be ashamed, we all do it. Most of us won’t make very much, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of either.

There are a ton of blogs out there telling you how to make more money, where to make more money, where to put your ads to make more money, with which advertising company you should sign up to make more money, so I’m not going to give myself carpal tunnel syndrome by repeating their advice.

What I will do is share with you how I manage the code and placement of my ads, from a purely administrative standpoint. As a Thesis user, I get a theme update fairly regularly, once every couple of months. This requires uploading and installing a whole new theme. Which means that any changes I’ve made to the structure of the theme are lost, including adding ad code to above the footer, below the comment box etc.

I have a simple text document (word will sometimes add funky code to your code, which you don’t want) and in this document I paste the relevant ad code. Then I identify where the code goes (footer, header, comments), whom the ad is with, and the size. This way, if I ever lose everything, at least replacing the ads is a simple matter of cut and paste. Hey, I have my priorities straight!

Go here for a good, simple, beginning guide to making money on your blog.
